Virginia Tech Head Coach Jim Thompson Inducted Into USTA Mid-Atlantic Hall of Fame

HERNDON, VA. – During the Centennial Gala presented by Trustar Bank, eight prestigious individuals were inducted into the USTA Mid-Atlantic Hall of Fame, including Virginia Tech Men’s Tennis Head Coach Jim Thompson. 

Thompson, who began his tenure as head coach of the Hokies in 1988, has led the men’s program to the post-season 15 times and has had players qualify a total of 24 times for the NCAA singles and doubles championships. Apart from one year, Virginia Tech has achieved a national ranking every season and has had at least one player ranked in the ITA singles rankings every year since 2002.

Thompson’s impact extends beyond the courts, emphasizing character and sportsmanship to every student-athlete who comes through his program. An active contributor to the tennis community, Thompson conducts weekly tennis clinics and has recently launched a wheelchair program in Blacksburg. Thompson has also served on the ITA Rules Committee and has been a member of the ITA Operating Committee. Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the ITA Atlantic Region.

The USTA Mid-Atlantic Hall of Fame Class of 2023 also included Gustavo Castillo, Page Crosland, David Crossland, Vicki Datlow, Sara Fornaciari, Joni Hannah, and Frances Tiafoe. Inductees were selected for their significant achievements in tennis as outstanding players and/or contributors to the growth of the sport in the region and beyond.
