The 2023 ITA Women’s All-American 32-player main draw kicked off Wednesday at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

It was business as usual for many of the top-seeded players.  Defending champion and top seed Fiona Crawley of North Carolina defeated Bobo Huang of BYU, 7-5, 6-4, while #2 seed Mary Stoiana of Texas A&M ousted NC State’s Sophie Abrams 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. The #3 seed Alexa Noel of Miami took down Auburn’s Ariana Arsenault 6-1, 6-2. Crawley, Stoiana and Noel are ranked as the #1, #2 and #3 players in the ITA-Tennis Point Women’s Pre-Season Rankings.

Stanford’s Angelica Blake had the biggest upset of the day in singles, beating North Carolina’s Reese Brantmeier. Brantmeier was the fourth seed and ranked #5 in the ITA-Tennis Point Women’s Pre-Season Rankings. The other seeded upset of the day went to Casie Wooten of Wake Forest, defeating #7 Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma St. 6-2, 7-6 (4). Wooten is into the Round of 16 after advancing through qualifying.

In the doubles draw, 32 teams began at the start of the day. Much like the singles draws, a majority of seeded teams will continue to day two of the championships. Both the #1 and #2 seeded teams from North Carolina were pushed in close match tie-breaker decisive sets. The #1 pairing of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty had a narrow 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 win over Georgia’s Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mert, while #2 seeded Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig held on to defeat Auburn’s Ali DeSpain and Adeline Flach 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Alabama’s team of Loudmilla Bencheikh and Anne Marie Hiser had the biggest upset of the day in doubles, defeating #5 seeds Katherine Duong and Megan Heuser of Illinois in a close two-setter 6-4, 7-6 (5). Dana Guzman and Alina Shcherbinia of Oklahoma defeated the #8 seeded pair of Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant of Georgia in a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win while #7 seeded Ayana Akli and Sarah Hamner of South Carolina were upset by Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres of Texas A&M. Stoiana is the #2 seed in the women’s singles draw.
