OVERLAND PARK, KS. – It was another day full of action at the 2024 ITA NAIA National Men’s and Women’s Team Indoor Championships at the Overland Park Tennis Center.
Starting off strong, No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett made quick work, defeating No. 5 Westcliff 4-0, to secure a spot in the men’s finals for the second year straight. With today’s win, the Grizzlies have yet to drop a match at the tournament.
Moving on to the first women’s match of the day, it was No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett versus No. 4 Tennessee Wesleyan. Much like the men, the Grizzly women jumped out to an early lead by grabbing the doubles point. They continued to roll in singles with wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6. As runners-up in 2023, Georgia Gwinnett looks to hoist the trophy this year.
In the afternoon matches, No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan and No. 3 Northwestern Ohio battled for over three hours. The Bulldogs came out of the gate strong, winning the doubles point at No. 2 and No. 3. Singles didn’t prove to be as straightforward with Northwestern Ohio taking the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 positions while Tennessee Wesleyan got the wins on No. 1 and No. 5. Coming down to court 6, it was sophomore David Leon that clinched the match for the Bulldogs in the third set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(5). Tennessee Wesleyan will face Georgia Gwinnett in the men’s finals.
The final match of the day consisted of another thriller with No. 2 Southeastern going up against No. 3 Xavier (La.). The Fire came out swinging to get the doubles win but the Nuggets came back in full force with wins in singles at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4. With a victory in the semifinals, Xavier (La.) will battle for the women’s championship title tomorrow against Georgia Gwinnett.
Finals play is set to begin tomorrow at the Overland Park Racquet Club in Overland Park, Kansas. For the men, the championship match will be played at 3 pm (CST), while the women are scheduled at 6:30 pm (CST).
