SAN DIEGO, CA – After two days of must-watch action, the quarterfinals are now set at the ITA National Fall Championships as players continue to work towards being crowned the final national champion of the fall college tennis season.
Across today’s play, some storied programs such as Ohio State and TCU on the men’s side, as well as North Carolina on the women’s side, found success in singles play placing two players apiece into the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, several upsets took place today throughout all of the draws bringing representatives from Cornell, Temple, USF, and Boston College, to name a few, into the quarterfinals.
In men’s singles, Alvin Tudorica (South Florida) and Radu Papoe (Cornell) each had victories over seeded players to keep their hopes alive for a national championship. For the women, Celia-Belle Mohr (Vanderbilt) and Anika Yarlagadda (North Carolina) took down top seeds to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
Across doubles, the Washington men’s duo of Ceaser Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn as well as the Boston College men’s pairing of JJ Bianchi and Jake Vassel upset top seeds in the draw on the day. The Northwestern tandem of Christina Hand and Justine Leong took down the No. 3 seeded pair this afternoon to continue on their impressive run in San Diego.
Play continues tomorrow from the Barnes Tennis Center as the quarterfinals begin along with the second round of the singles and doubles consolation draws. Action will begin at 10 a.m. (PDT) with singles taking to the court first with doubles to follow.
