2023 ITA Regional Small College Championships – Week Three Recap

In the final week of the 2023 ITA Regional Small College Championships, the last group of players booked their tickets to Rome, Georgia for the ITA Cup on October 12-16. 

In Division II, Lubbock Christian’s Martins Abamu won his second consecutive South Central Regional singles championship. In doubles, Texas Permian Basin’s Takumi Katsuda and Jonas Krahofer took home the title, defeating Midwestern State in the finals. 

In D-III, Matthew Michibata had a historic weekend at the Northwest Regionals, becoming the first The College of New Jersey’s singles champion since assistant coach Michael Klimchak in 2007. Michibata also won the doubles title with Harrison Maitland-Carter for the first regional doubles title in program history. 

The Gustavus Adolphus men’s team also had a historic weekend with Midwest Region singles and doubles titles.  Gage Gohl won the singles title and partnered with Tyler Haddorff for the doubles crown in a 10-7 match tie-breaker in an all-Gustavus championship match. 

In an all Claremont-Mudd-Scripps final at the West Regionals, Lindsay Eisenman won the women’s singles title and continued a dominant weekend by capturing the doubles title with Ella Brissett. The Middlebury men’s team took care of business at the New England Regionals with Julian Wu winning the singles title and Hugh Hentschel and Thehan Wijemanne earning the men’s doubles title. Similarly, the Case Western Reserve men’s team dominated the Central Regional with Ajay Majenthiran capturing the men’s singles title and Vishwa Aduru and Diego Maza taking the men’s doubles title.

Rounding out Division III play, Pacific (Ore.) swept the competition at the Northwest Regionals with Cassidy Binder sweeping the women’s singles and doubles championships with sister Sydnie Binder. 

In NAIA, junior Perry Gregg from Holy Cross (Ind.) swept the Men’s Central-East Regionals in men’s singles and doubles with Laurenz Flender. At the West Regional, Westcliff earned titles on the men’s and women’s sides with Felix Veyhle winning men’s singles and doubles with Max Mueller. Anna Ruiz Masip and Elena Gunfaus won the women’s doubles. 

Northwestern Ohio made a statement at the Midwest Regionals with Sergio Conde bringing home the singles title and teammates Martin Stanchev and Malik Omarkhanov taking the doubles crown. Alizee Ripolles also left her mark on the tournament by becoming the first Racer to win the women’s regional singles title since 2016. 

Other dominant performances at NAIA included the Xavier (La.) doubles pair of Jacobi Bain and Nereo Suarez earning the Gulf Regional title and Mbali Langa and McKenna Wheatley winning women’s doubles by defeating the top three seeds. 

At the NJCAA and CCCAA levels, Gavin Sonntag and Enrique Silveria from American River College won the men’s doubles title at the Northern California Regionals, taking out the top-seeded team. Laney Reddick and Bella Hernandez continued the trend for the American River Beavers by winning the women’s doubles title. In the Southern California Regionals, the Glendale Community College men dominated with the singles title going to Jean-Baptiste Badon and the doubles crown earned by Adam Ridaoui and Tory Bailey. At the Southern Regionals, Helen Hernandez of Jones won both the women’s singles and doubles titles with partner Molly Bennett.
