TEMPE, Ariz. – The race to the ITA Cup is on, as the ITA Regional Small College Championships began in the final week of September. More than two dozen regional tournaments have already been played at the Division III, NAIA, and junior college level, rounding the ITA Cup field into further focus.
Formerly known as the Small College Nationals, the rich history of the ITA Cup dates back to 1986. In 2025, more than 8,000 players participated in 60 regional tournaments to gain entry into the ITA Cup field.
The opening weekends of the regional tournaments saw standout performances and individual breakthroughs across the country.
Division III star Caitlin Bui of Washington University in St. Louis helped the school win both the singles and doubles championships at the same regional for the first time in 10 years. Bui, who led the Bears to the 2025 NCAA Division III Team Championship title, beat Kenyon’s Lora Szabo (6-0, 6-1) to claim the singles title and partnered with Eleanor Archer to win the doubles crown.
In NAIA play, the Xavier University of Louisiana’s men and women swept the Gulf Region with victories from Christian Sanchez (men’s singles), Edilson Rosa/Fatih Sisic (men’s doubles), Maja Brnic (women’s singles) and Maja Brnic/Asadah Ma’at (women’s doubles), ensuring Xavier is well represented at the mid-October ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia.
In the NJCAA’s Southeast Region, the women’s doubles tandem of Coastal Alabama delivered the school’s most successful tournament in program history. The unseeded pairing of sophomores Isabella Canedo/Xaviera Melgar couldn’t be contained en route to the ‘A’ flight doubles title. In the title match, the Coyote duo toppled No. 1 seed Rachel Blais/Yu Lin of Oxford College in a hard-fought three sets (6-7, 6-1, 6-2). Now Rome-bound, the Canedo/Melgar will represent the Coyotes for the national championship next month.
Division III Tufts enjoyed another successful showing at an ITA Regional site, as senior Garv Bahl clinched the school’s second singles title in the last three seasons. Bahl beat No. 8 Noah Lewis (Middlebury) in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, to win the finals. In 2024, Tufts’ Vuk Vuksanovic was the New England Regional singles champion. In doubles play, the Jumbos’ Nico Tremblay/Stavros Mastrogamvrakis upended top-seeded Andreas Sillaste/Lukas Frangenberg (Amherst) in the championship, marking the second time in the past three seasons that Tufts has won both the singles and doubles title at regionals.
