Tempe, AZ – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (“ITA”) is proud to announce today both the recipient and the endowment of the ITA Meritorious Service Award, recognition given annually to an ITA coach who has gone “above and beyond” in their commitment and contributions to the ITA and college tennis in general.

Celebrating the contributions of ITA CEO Emeritus Dr. Timothy Russell, Jody and John Arnhold as well as the Arnhold Foundation have endowed this award in Russell’s name as the ITA Timothy Russell Meritorious Service Award endowed by Jody & John Arnhold/Arnhold Foundation.

“It brings us great joy to endow this prestigious award in honor of longtime ITA CEO, Timothy Russell,” stated John Arnhold. “College tennis has always held a special place in our family, and under Russell’s leadership the sport continued to reach new heights. We also would like to extend our congratulations to the 2025 Meritorious Service Award recipient, Billy Pate. His contributions to the sport of college tennis have been numerous and it is fitting for him to be joining the decorated list of recipients of this award.”

As just the second chief executive in the organization’s storied history, Russell was appointed CEO and President of the ITA on July 1, 2015 and swiftly led the organization to new heights, building on the strong foundation that his predecessor, Dr. David A Benjamin, established during his time leading the ITA. He promoted the understanding that college tennis is ultimately about higher education. Bound by the belief that college tennis is the connective tissue for American tennis, Russell helped renew bonds between the ITA and the sport’s national governing body, the USTA. He developed connections with the International Tennis Federation, the global governing body of the sport, as well as the ATP and WTA. While professionalizing the Association, and expanding coach education offerings of the ITA, he worked tirelessly to showcase that college tennis develops the leaders of tomorrow whether on the tennis court or in the professional world and that college tennis is a pathway to success as a professional tennis player.

“My career was as an educator and builder of organizations,” said Dr. Russell. “Throughout my life, I have believed in servant leadership. As ITA CEO, I recognized that the best coaches are teachers, mentors, and leaders. It is humbling to know that these values will honor extraordinarily dedicated coaches who contribute regularly and over the long haul to our Association and sport.  I am truly humbled that Jody and John Arnold, two wonderful and inspirational friends who live incredible lives of love and service, have endowed this award in perpetuity with the Arnhold Foundation.”

This year the ITA is honoring Princeton Men’s Tennis Coach Billy Pate as the winner of the 2025 ITA Timothy Russell Meritorious Service Award.

With 30 years of coaching experience, Pate has been a shining example of a coach going “above and beyond,” serving for many years on the ITA Board of Directors and numerous ITA committees, including serving for many years as the Chair of the DI Men’s Operating Committee. All of this alongside his many duties as a head coach for one of the top programs in the Ivy League and country.

At the helm of the Princeton program, Pate and the Tigers have been ranked as high as No. 17 in the ITA Division I Team Rankings while amassing 206 career wins during his 13 years in New Jersey. During the 2024-25 season, Princeton achieved an impressive 22-9 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

As a former college tennis player himself, Pate played at Mississippi State and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1992. Remaining heavily involved with the collegiate game, Pate began his coaching career as the head coach at Georgia Perimeter College in 1995 and would have stops at Notre Dame (2000-02) as the assistant coach and at Alabama (2002-2012) as the head coach before beginning at Princeton in 2012.

“I’m deeply grateful to receive this wonderful award,” stated Pate. “It is an honor to be recognized alongside the previous winners as their leadership and commitment to service have paved the way for all of us in college tennis. This award reflects the support of a large group of people; notably my players, mentors and colleagues. I’m enterally grateful for Tim Russell’s long service to the ITA and the Arnhold Foundation for endowing the award in Tim’s honor.”

Previous recipients of the ITA Meritorious Service Award include Dave Fish/Harvard (2014), Ann Lebedeff/Pomona-Pitzer (2015), Sheila McInerney/Arizona State (2016), Peter Wright/Cal (2017), Bill Richards/Ball State (2018), Christine Davis/Smith College (2019), Bev Buckley/Rollins (2020), Chase Hodges/Georgia Gwinnett (2021), John Shackelford/Sewanee (2023), and Vince Westbrook/Tulsa (2024).

Pate will be honored during the ITA Leadership Awards Weekend. Here, Pate will be recognized alongside other dignitaries as well as student-athletes who have won national awards for their outstanding attributes in the areas of leadership, sportsmanship, on-court performance, STEM, and much more.
