Paris, France – As sights now turn to clay court tennis, numerous former and current college tennis players will look to earn their spot into a Grand Slam singles draw as qualifying play is officially underway at the 2025 French Open.
With more and more players using the college pathway to develop their game before taking on the pro tours, this years Roland Garros qualifying draws feature 34 current and former collegians with 22 players featured in the men’s qualifying draw and 12 players featured in the women’s qualifying draw.
Notably, names such as Nishesh Basavareddy, Eliot Spizzirri, Colton Smith, James Trotter, and Murphy Cassone all will look to make it into a Grand Slam singles main draw just one year after they made the jump from college tennis to the pro tour, and for Smith just weeks after he competed with Arizona in the NCAA Tournament.
For the women, current LSU women’s tennis player Kayla Cross will take part in qualifying play at the French Open. The freshman for the Tigers helped lead her team to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in program history and was in Waco just earlier this week competing alongside her teammates.
Looking back at the 2024 French Open, Francisco Cerundolo and Emma Navarro both made the deepest runs of any former collegians reaching the fourth round, while Ben Shelton and Peyton Stearns each advanced to the third round respectively.
