VENTURA, Calif. – For the third consecutive spring, it was the American River Women who were crowned a champion at the CCCAA State Championships, while the Irvine Valley Men erased a 2-0 deficit en route to their first title since 2017.
Wednesday’s action of the two team championship finals began with the Women’s bracket, where two No. 1 seeds in American River and Bakersfield met at Ventura College. Bakersfield made an initial bid to end American River’s quest for a three-peat, opening the contest with two points in doubles play, but the Beavers hardly flinched. They cruised through singles play, winning four of six contests to bury Bakersfield, 5-3. It extended American River’s winning streak to 42 matches dating back to March 2023 while also cementing a perfect 17-0 season.
Shortly after, it was No. 2 Foothill and No. 4 Irvine Valley in the Men’s team final. Like the Women’s title match, eventual champion Irvine Valley had to dig themselves out of a hole after doubles play. Foothill grabbed the first two doubles points, but Irvine Valley stunned the Owls with four consecutive singles points to win their first state title in eight seasons.
The Lasers entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed in Southern California. This remarkable stretch to a team title saw them upend the top three seeds in the tournament in No. 1 Ventura, No. 2 Foothill and No. 3 Riverside.
Individual competition for the 3C2A State Championships begin Thursday, April 24 at various parks in the Ventura area.
