Tempe, AZ – The 2024 ITA Sectional Championships came to an end this past weekend. With the conclusion of the tournament, it was the last chance for top players from across the country to qualify for the 2024-25 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Waco, Texas on November 19-24, 2024.
Each sectional tournament had a singles draw size of 32 and a doubles draw size of 16. From this, six (6) singles players from each section (24 total) qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalist, two quarterfinal playoff winners). Meanwhile, three (3) doubles teams from each section (12 total) qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship (champion, finalist, third place).
On the men’s side, Michigan’s Gavin Young booked his spot in the NCAA Singles Championships, finishing as semifinalist at the Central Sectional. Young, the top seed in the draw, earned impressive wins over opponents from Michigan State, Nebraska, and Oklahoma State. Young looks to continue his success from last season in which he earned First-Team All-B1G honors, qualified for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, and was a semifinalist at the ITA All-America Championships.
Cooper Williams, Paul Inchauspe, and Dhakshineswar Suresh, all hailing from the East Sectional, secured their spots in Waco this past weekend. Williams, a sophomore transfer from Harvard, made his run to the semifinals without dropping a set in any match. Wake Forest’s Suresh also completed his run to the semifinals in a slightly closer fashion, with each of his singles matches containing at least one tie break set. Princeton’s Paul Inchauspe took home the title at the East Sectional after defeating the unseeded Lucas Andrade da Silva of South Carolina.
On the women’s side, Texas A&M’s Nicole Khirin earned her spot in the NCAA Singles Championship this past weekend. The junior made her way to the finals of the Central Sectional, defeating Houston’s Santa Strombacha 6-1, 7-6(6) in the quarterfinals and Michigan’s Lily Jones 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals.
At the women’s East Sectional, tournament play was played to completion with Sarah Hamner taking home the championship title, defeating North Carolina’s Carson Tanguilig 6-1, 6-4. With the win, the South Carolina senior is heading to her fourth consecutive NCAA Singles Championship. Last season, Hamner began the year ranked No. 25 in the ITA Pre-Season Rankings and went on to remain in the Top-25 of the ITA singles rankings throughout the season, peaking at No. 4 and finishing the season ranked No. 23.
