FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – With qualifying complete and the main draws set at the 2024 US Open Championships, many former and current collegians look to make their stamp among the best players in the world at the final Grand Slam of the calendar year.
In the men’s singles draw 16 players with college ties will be attempting their run at the title. Notably, Ben Shelton (13) (Florida), and Francisco Cerundolo (29) (South Carolina) will enter the tournament as seeded players.
Eliot Spizzirri (Texas), two-time ITA National Player of the Year and Big 12 Player of the Year has advanced to his first major main draw after making it through three rounds of qualifying. Spizzirri will join the likes of other former collegiate players such as Nuno Borges (Mississippi State), Marcos Giron (UCLA), and Brandon Nakashima (UVA).
Eleven players with college ties are set to compete in the women’s singles draw in this year’s tournament. Among the nine, Danielle Collins (11) (Florida, Virginia), Emma Navarro (13), and Diana Shnaider (17) (NC State) will be among those seeded on the women’s side.
Collins, the 2022 Australian Open Finalist, will meet fellow American Caroline Dolehide in the first round of the US Open, for the start of the final grand slam tournament of her career. Fresh off claiming the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Shnaider, the former Wolfpack women’s tennis star, looks to continue her impressive calendar year in New York while Navarro will look to continue her Grand Slam success after making a deep run to the 2024 Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Collins, Navarro, and Shnaider will be joined by other former collegians such as Peyton Sterns (Texas) and 2024 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Lulu Sun (Texas).
Within both doubles draws, there will be 70 players with college ties competing in both the men’s and women’s doubles draws. This includes 14 players who will be on seeded teams within the draws, with four out of the five of the top women’s doubles seeds having one former collegian on the team. On the men’s side, the third-seeded Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury look to make it four straight at this year’s US Open after having captured the 2021, 2022, and 2023 titles in New York.
Play begins Monday, August 26th, and will continue throughout the next two weeks from the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
