Washington, D.C. – The TCU men’s tennis team and the UChicago men’s and women’s tennis teams were among those in attendance at the 2024 NCAA College Athlete Day at the White House yesterday morning. This year, the event honored the NCAA’s 90 national champions from the 2023-24 academic year, with many of those championship teams in attendance.
Vice President Kamala Harris delivered remarks to the student-athletes, family members, friends, and individuals in attendance, congratulating each team on their grit, passion, and dedication to their respective sport. Although the White House frequently hosts champion teams from around the country and globe, this year marked the second time that champions from all three collegiate divisions were invited.
Coming off of the NCAA Team National Championships just a few months ago, TCU and UChicago were the lone tennis programs that publicly accepted the presidential invitation and represented the thousands of student-athletes and hundreds of programs that participate in collegiate tennis each season.
In the showdown of the season, the Horned Frogs won their first NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis National Championship this past May, narrowly defeating Texas 4-3 in the Final. In doing so, TCU became the second Big 12 program to win an NCAA National Championship and has now won three national titles in as many seasons, having captured consecutive ITA Indoor National Championships in 2022 and 2023.
After making it to three consecutive NCAA Division III National Championship appearances, the UChicago women’s tennis team finally reversed their fortunes and walked away with the crown this season, defeating Wesleyan 5-3 in the finals. The Maroons finished their first National Championship winning season with a 23-1 record and a 16-match win streak.
Following shortly after, the UChicago men’s tennis team followed suit and secured their second NCAA National Championship in the past three seasons, defeating No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-4 in the Final. They finished the season with an overall 25-1 record and an 18-match win streak.
Other programs who were in attendance included Texas (Volleyball, Division I), UCLA (Men’s Volleyball, Division I), Clemson (Men’s Soccer, Division I), Misericordia (Baseball, Division III), Kenyon College (Women’s Swim and Dive, Division III), Trine University (Men’s Basketball, Division III), Harvard (Fencing, Division I), Kutztown (Women’s Field Hockey, Division II), and Florida State (Women’s Soccer, Division I) to name a few.
