TEMPE, Az. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is pleased to announce today the selections of the University of Virginia (men) and the Ohio State University (women) as the 2024 ITA Division I Men’s and Women’s National Team Indoor Championship Sportsmanship Award winners.

Awarded each year following the conclusion of the ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships, the ITA Team Sportsmanship Award is presented to the teams that display exceptional sportsmanship, character, and ethical conduct throughout the national championship.

Throughout the 2024 ITA Division I Men’s National Team Indoor Championship, the team that displayed these traits each day of the tournament was the University of Virginia. Finishing as semifinalists, the Cavaliers didn’t let the level of competition waiver their level of sportsmanship as even in the biggest of moments the coaching staff and players showed exceptional levels of character and respect.

“On behalf of the entire UVA Men’s Tennis Program, I would like to thank the ITA for the great honor of our team being named the Sportsmanship Award Winner at this year’s ITA National Indoor Championships,” stated Virginia Men’s Tennis Head Coach, Andres Pedroso. “Our program takes great pride in competing with class, respecting our opponents, and representing all the values that are expected of a collegiate tennis player.  Proper sportsmanship only elevates and enhances the competitive experience for our student-athletes, and we are happy to have played a small role in this important collective effort by all the teams at the ITA Indoors.”

Similarly, at the 2024 ITA Division I Women’s National Team Indoor Championships, it was the Ohio State Buckeyes that not only showcased an exceptional level of tennis on the court but an exceptional level of sportsmanship as well. Making the quarterfinals of the tournament, the Buckeyes battled in every single match, but never let the moment sway their respect for the opponent.

“I am really proud and thankful for our team this year,” noted Ohio State Women’s Tennis Head Coach, Melissa Schaub. “Winning the Sportsmanship Award at this level is something I know everyone in our locker room will be so happy about. When you are at the National Indoors you are there to compete against the best teams in the country. I think you can compete your absolute hardest every time that you step on the court while also understanding you are representing something bigger than yourself. We are always trying to represent our team, Ohio State, and college tennis the best we can. College tennis is amazing in so many ways and I feel lucky to get to coach a great group of student-athletes.”

These two teams were praised not only by officials but also by opposing players and coaches alike for their great representation of our sport during this tournament.
